WATCH: Hilarious video of Stan Wawrinka making Jannik Sinner carry his “nice Yonex bag” after a joint practice session!
On a tennis court, players face each other with ruthless single-minded determination, aiming to wrestle every point out of their opponent’s hand. And as much as tennis fans enjoy this tenacity, every once in a while, we look forward to comic relief. A recent banter between Stan Wawrinka and Jannik Sinner captured that feeling perfectly.
Recently, Stan Wawrinka shared some snippets of a joint practice session between himself and the younger Italian. The duo was accompanied by their respective coaches – Magnus Norman and Darren Cahill. The practice session took place at Monte Carlo country club, a clay court that overlooked the famed French Riviera. At the end of a grueling session, Wawrinka cheekily bossed his junior around and get him to carry his kit bag, eliciting a plethora of reactions online.
The video shared by Wawrinka on his Instagram stories showed a hilarious interaction between the 3-time Grand Slam champion and his practice partner, 21-year-old Jannik Sinner. The video opens with Sinner lifting a black kit bag, as Stan speaks to him from behind the camera saying “be careful, that is my nice Yonex bag!”
“Please take care of it, please” Stan further implores Sinner, and the latter politely rebuke “but this is not even heavy.” Continuing with his antics, the Swiss replies “don’t worry, there’s many bags!”
Jannik Sinner and Stan Wawrinka: Year At a Glance
21-year-old Jannik Sinner had a decent run this year. The Italian is currently ranked no. 15 in the world. He defeated eventual world no.1 Carlos Alcaraz in the finals of the Croatia Open, an ATP 250 event, to win his first clay court title. That’s not all, the popular personality also made it to the quarterfinals of 3 majors (Australian Open, Wimbledon, and the U.S Open). He also played a crucial role in helping team Italy qualify for the Final 8 of the Davis Cup.
After his run at the Paris Masters ended, Sinner announced on social media that his 2022 tennis session was at an end. He claimed this year had been the most demanding year of his career. While he had intended to play for his country at the Davis Cup, a finger injury sustained in Paris prevented him from doing so.
Stan Wawrinka has been legendary in the tennis circuit due to his late breakthrough. The Swiss turned pro in 2002, but until 2014, his only shot at the limelight had been the doubles gold medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. But between 2014 and 2016, he won 3 Grand Slams in quick succession. Sadly, injuries plagued him and his performance has tanked in recent years.
The gritty 37-year-old hasn’t admitted defeat and continues to practice regularly and participate in tournaments. He participated in 15 important tournaments this year, with his best performance being a semifinal spot in the Metz Open. He has a 10-15 win-loss record this year. The one-time World no.3 is currently ranked 151 by ATP.
