Serena Williams, regarded as the greatest tennis player of all time, has retired from the sport after losing to Australian Ajla Tomljanovic in the third round of the 2022 US Open. Serena lost the gripping match in three sets 5-7,7-6(4),1-6 in over 3 hours. She has played over 100 matches at the US Open and this was the first time that one of her matches went beyond the 3-hour mark.

Serena played an amazing match but Tomljanovic was just the better player on the given day. The American legend had an amazing start to the match and was soon up a break. She lead 5-3 in the first set but Tomljanovic raised her level all of a sudden and broke back convincingly. She won consecutive games to bag the first set 7-5.

The level of tennis was even better in the second set as Serena once again took the first decisive break and was serving from the set at 5-4. But a sudden rush from Tomljanovic forced a couple of mistakes from Serena as she got broken. The set eventually went into the tie-breaker and Serena played it to near perfection to save her career. She won the set 7-6(4) and forced a decider.

Serena once again began the third set by taking an early break in the first game but since then, her legs weren’t supporting her and her level dropped. Tomljanovic stayed in the match and capitalized on it to break Serena twice and held serve. She then serve at 5-1 to end Serena’s career but what followed was a game full of clutch points from Serena.

Tomljanovic kept on having match points and Serena kept on saving them. And the manner in which she saved those was commendable and left the fans in awe. Tomljanovic required 6 match points before she eventually converted them to win the match.

Given Serena was down and out and was on the brink of retiring, she played her heart out in the last game of her career making fans emotional.
