WATCH: “I’m gonna come back and I will win this thing one day,” Frances Tiafoe breaks down emotionally after ‘heartbreaking’ loss in the US Open semifinal
Frances Tiafoe
24-year-old Frances Tiafoe’s dream run at the 2022 US Open came to a ‘heartbreaking’ end with him crashing out in the semifinals. He lost on Friday night to teen sensation Carlos Alcaraz in five sets 7-6(6),3-6,1-6,7-6(5),3-6, and despite playing amazing tennis, had to pack his bags. This was Tiafoe’s best grand slam result and he was ever so close to reaching his maiden major final.
Tiafoe played his heart out against Alcaraz and was getting the crowd involved throughout the match. His energy and zeal echoed in the Arthur Ashe Stadium as he pushed himself and Alcaraz to the very limit. But it was not his night as he came second best despite giving his best. Naturally, he was heartbroken at the end and couldn’t hold back his tears.
While addressing the crowd ahead of Alcaraz, Tiafoe was consoled by Patrick McEnroe as he struggled to find words for his emotions. Tiafoe said that he gave everything he had on the court but Alcaraz was just too good tonight. He added that he came this fortnight to New York to win the US Open but he feels like he has let everyone down.
“I gave everything I had. Too good from Carlos tonight. I gave everything I had from the last 2 weeks. Honestly, I came here wanting to win the US Open and I feel like I’ve let you guys down. This one really really hurts,” he said.
Frances Tiafoe vows to win the US Open one day
He further said that Alcaraz was just the better player on the given day and said that he will win a lot of grand slam titles. He then landed his opponent and revealed how privileged he was to share the court with him. He concluded by saying that he will come back and win the US Open one day.
Tiafoe said: “Too good from Carlos. Man, you’re going to win a lot of grand slams. You’re one hell of a player, hell of a person and I’m happy I got to share the center court with you. I’m gonna come back and I’m gonna win this thing one day, I’m sorry guys.”
