“Is he mentally unstable?” Daniil Medvedev ridiculed on social media for throwing his racket in frustration and racially mocking the French crowd by calling them monkeys
Daniil Medvedev
Former World No.1 and top seed Daniil Medvedev shockingly bowed out of the Round of 16 of the Moselle Open at Metz in three sets 4-6,6-7(7),3-6 to 3-time grand slam champion Stan Wawrinka. This was Wawrinka’s biggest win in almost 3 years as he sails into the quarterfinal of the Moselle Open where he’ll face Mikael Ymer on Friday.
But interestingly, Medvedev’s behavior was very questionable during the match. The French crowd was getting behind Wawrinka since he was the underdog and at times was getting onto Medvedev’s nerves. On Wawrinka’s serve when he was a break up in the third set, the crowd started to get against Medvedev which the Russian obviously didn’t like.
He lost his cool and smashed his racket towards the crowd when they won’t stop booing him. The crowd too got offended by his rash behavior and didn’t stop booing him. Medvedev completely lost his cool and started mocking them with his facial and bodily expressions, He crossed the line when he impersonated a monkey by his physical gestures and gave it back to the crowd.
While racket abuse is normal in tennis to express frustration, racially abusing someone is where the line should be drawn. Medvedev was pretty frustrated and mocked the crowd and provoked them.
Tennis Twitter rages over Daniil Medvedev’s inappropriate gestures
Tennis fans were pretty agitated by Medvedev’s racist gestures. They even called for a ban on him because this was not the first time he’s done something racist on a tennis court. This puts the sport in a very bad light because he was the World No.1 until to weeks back.
