Serena Williams with her family

Former world no. 1 Serena Williams returned to active competition at Wimbledon in June after being out of action for over a year. The 23-time slam champion received a wildcard after dropping way down to 1204th in the world rankings. She drew Frenchwoman Harmony Tan in the first round in a match that lasted over three overs, making it one of the longest in the women’s draw. Williams lost 5-7, 6-1, 6-7(7).

In spite of zero match practice, Williams put up a fight and occasionally showed flashes of brilliance. She is expected to compete at the US Open where she has a superlative record. She boasts a 106-14 career record in New York and has reached the semifinals or better 14 times.

Serena Williams is currently enjoying her downtime to rejuvenate for the upcoming US Open after a disappointing first-round Wimbledon exit. The 23-time slam champion is currently vacationing in Athens, Greece with her husband, Alexis Ohanian, and daughter Olympia.

She uploaded a beautiful family portrait of the three in front of the famous Parthenon on the Athenian Acropolis. It was a former temple, dedicated to the goddess Athena, the patroness of Athens.

Interestingly, also located in the vicinity is the Temple of Athena Nike, the latter of which, happens to be the inspiration for the name of the American company Nike, a longtime endorser of Serena Williams.
