As soon as he went down, Rinderknech and the ball kids rushed to his aid. While the Frenchman checked upon Berrettini, the ball kids blocked the camera’s with umbrellas around him to not show him lying in pain. Berrettini’s trainers and physios rushed to his help to check upon him as he was helped by them to reach his seat.

Matteo Berrettini’s injury was as serious as it looked. A fighter so far in his career, the manner in which he went down screaming in agony made it clear he won’t be in a position to continue. Despite consultation with his trainer, he saw it fitting to hand a walkover to Arthur Rinderknech and forfeit from the US Open.

As a result, Arthur is in the third round of a Grand Slam for the very first time in his career. He now awaits the winner of the match between Russia’s Andrey Rublev and compatriot Gael Monfils. As for Berrettini, what has already been a horrible season, has just gotten even worse.

All eyes from his camp and his fans will be on the reports of the scans that he will have to undergo to understand the extent of his injury. Alexander Zverev’s injury against Rafael Nadal at the 2022 French Open was quite similar but it won’t be wise to speculate much on the subject unless official confirmation. Wishing the Italian a speedy recovery and hope to see him back soon on the Tour.
