Carlos Alcaraz won his maiden Grand Slam title at the 2022 US Open beating Casper Ruud 6-4,2-6,7-6(1),6-3 in three hours and 21 minutes. He became the youngest player ever to win the US Open title since Pete Sampras in 1990. With this win, he also becomes the youngest and first teen player to become World number one in the ATP rankings.
Having won the first set, the Spaniard was broken twice by Ruud to win the second set and level the match as 1-1. The third set went to a tie-breaker and the Norwegian shifted gears to level up his game, but the Spaniard was the better player of the day and looked totally in it to win it. The 19-year-old Spaniard is undoubtedly one of the best youngsters in the world and has proved to be one of the toughest competitors on the block.
He reached his maiden Grand Slam final after beating the young American Frances Tiafoe in the semi-finals in five sets 6-7(6),6-3,6-1,6-7(5),6-3. He defeated Jannik Sinner in the quarter-finals in another five-set game that went on for 5hrs and 15 minutes of play which was one of the longest matches of this year’s US Open. He defeated Sebastian Baez, Federico Coria, Jenson Brooksby, and Marin Cilic in the initial stages of the competition.

Alcaraz, the new world number one collapsed on the floor immediately as the ball went out after a moment of cherishing her success, went to hug Ruud who was waiting at the nets for the customary handshake, and congratulated his achievement. He broke down in tears while sitting on his chair trying to gather his thoughts which left everyone on social media emotional and everyone extended their love and support for the young champion.
During the post-match interview, Alcaraz stated that he missed some of his family members who could not make it to watch the finals and celebrate his achievement, especially his mother and grandfather. He said “My mum, she is not here, and my grandfather. I was thinking about them. A lot of family, our team, are here but a lot of people from my family couldn’t come here to watch the final, and I was thinking about all of them.”
