History has been made on the hallowed grounds of the Roland Garros. Serbian great Novak Djokovic made the most of the opportunities presented to him to defeat Casper Ruud 7-6(1), 6-3, 7-5 in the finals of the 2023 French Open. The Serb is now officially leading the race for most men’s singles Majors for the very first time in his career overtaking Rafael Nadal.

Now a 23-time Major winner, Djokovic was no match for the Norwegian, who made a surprising start to the match. Ruud broke and held well to take a 4-2 lead in the first set. As tennis fans prepared for Djokovic’s reply, the Serb did not disappoint. He showed his mental and physical prowess to take the first set into the tiebreaker by leveling things at 5-5. Tiebreaker Djokovic has been one of the most fearsome players, and the world has seen once again why this is said so.

The second set was just Djokovic toying with Ruud, making him do the hard work. The World No. 4 was made as a puppet with strings in Nole’s hands, and the Serb won set 6-3. The third set was, however, fought more closely by the two men. The crowd also got going cheering and jeering for both with Djokovic facing much of the heat for his time-taking service. Nevertheless, he ignored the chaos to break Ruud to serve for the title and wrapped up the match comfortably.

As the tradition of players to make the victory run to their boxes, Djokovic did the same. His wife Jelena, parents Dijana and Srdjan, and kids Stefan and Tara were all in attendance to watch him make history. Following the win, Djokovic quickly ran to celebrate with them as his coaching team led by Goran Ivanisevic rejoiced in celebrations.

Novak Djokovic’s greatest fortnight in Paris

Having trailed Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer all his life in the race for most Majors, the 2022 Wimbledon title saw Novak Djokovic overtake the retired Swiss maestro. With the win at the 2023 Australian Open, the Serb matched Nadal at 22 titles each. With the Spaniard out of the season due to injury, Djokovic did not waste any time to take the crucial lead.
