Serena Williams has been out of competition since the 2021 Wimbledon Championships when she was forced to withdraw in the first round against Aliaksandra Sasnovich. The American was forced to withdraw midway through the opening set due to a hamstring issue. Since then, ten months have gone and the 23-time Grand Slam champion has yet to return. Williams had planned to return in time for the Australian Open at the start of the year, but her return has been repeatedly postponed in recent months.

With fans wondering if they’ll ever see the 40-year-old on a tennis court again, the former World No. 1 chose to give them the best news she could on Thursday. Serena Williams can be seen practising more fiercely than ever before in an Instagram video. The American bounced around on a hardcourt, hitting a succession of exquisite forehands and backhands before peering intensely at the camera, possibly hinting at a return.

Serena Williams has hinted that she will play tennis again at Wimbledon this year. The 23-time grand slam champion has not competed professionally since withdrawing from her first-round match against Aliaksandra Sasnovich at Wimbledon last year due to a hamstring issue. She also missed the US Open due to her injury, and she declined to compete in the Tokyo Olympics. She did not compete in this year’s Australian Open because she was unhappy with her fitness level.

However, the 40-year-old hinted that she will compete at Wimbledon this summer in an Instagram story with NFL quarterback Aaron Rodgers last month. “We’ve been talking about my comeback and he’s been hyping me up and getting me ready for Wimbledon. Can’t wait!” When Rodgers asked her if she would play at this year’s US Open Williams said, “Wimbledon’s before the US Open, I’ve got to play Wimbledon first. Exciting!”

Williams is attempting to break Margaret Court’s 24-grand slam singles title record. In 2017, she won the Australian Open, and in 2018 and 2019, she reached the finals of the US Open and Wimbledon. Wimbledon takes place from June 27 until July 10. Her most recent victory came in 2016 when she defeated Angelique Kerber in the final. Williams has a global ranking of 246.
