World No.2 Novak Djokovic will be up against Stan Wawrinka in a box office third round of the 2023 Wimbledon Championships on Friday (July 7). This match sure is going to be an interesting one, given their intense rivalry at the past Grand Slam events.
Wawrinka, in his second round, defeated Argentina’s Tomas Martin Etcheverry in four sets with the score of 6-3, 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 to advance to the third round. Meanwhile, Djokovic overcame Jordan Thompson, 6-3, 7-6(7-4), 7-5 in the second round.
Djokovic and Wawrinka have clashed against each other 27 times with the Serb leading the head-to-head record 20-6. Though Djokovic is way ahead with 20 wins, Wawrinka’s two victories against the Serb came in two Grand Slam events- at the 2015 French Open and the 2016 US Open.
Wawrinka defeated the 36-year-old with the score of 4-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 in the 2015 French Open final. In the 2016 US Open final, Wawrinka secured the victory over the Serb in four sets 6-7, 6-4, 7-5, 6-3.

Novak Djokovic, after his second-round win over Jordan Thompson, praised Wawrinka for still going strong at the age of 38 after multiple surgeries. He also joked that the Swiss veteran took away two Grand Slam titles from him. Djokovic also hoped to face him after a long time. Meanwhile, Wawrinka said he is happy to play one last time against Djokovic.
“I’ll enjoy it if I don’t get killed,” said Wawrinka about his upcoming clash with Djokovic. He stopped the presenter from mentioning his record against the Serb and left everyone in splits. “I’m happy to have the chance to play against him on the grass at least one time. It’s a big challenge but hopefully, I can come to a higher level and be competitive. I’ll push to the maximum and see what happens.”

It’s also worth worthing that Djokovic has lost just twice at the All England Club since 2013. One of these two matches was due to an injury which forced him to withdraw. The four-time defending Wimbledon champion will be achieving two milestones if he wins the trophy here- he will tie the tally with Roger Federer with eight Wimbledon titles and he will also lift his record-extending 24th Grand Slam title.
