Serena Williams is without a doubt, one of the greatest players to have played the sport. Her aggression, her charisma, and her on-court flamboyance are something very rare. She is credited to have reformed the way women’s tennis is played and is also considered to be the main reason for the viewership of women’s tennis.

But apart from her greatness, she has also been one of the most controversial figures in tennis. Her on-court antics and breaking bad moments are written in tennis books boldly. For almost 15 years, her rivalry with Maria Sharapova is considered to be one of the best in women’s tennis. Serena holds a boasting 20-2 H2H record against Sharapova and hasn’t lost a single match to her in their last 19 meetings.

The rivalry was pretty much one-sided with Serena dominating the Russian but what made this rivalry special was the early build-up to it. Serena was in her prime during the 2004 season and out of nowhere, a 17-year-old Sharapova comes and beats her in the Wimbledon final to win her first major title. This incident got into Serena’s head and she has manhandled Sharapova ever since then.

The two once again met during the 2007 Australian Open final. Normalcy was restored as Serena was dominating the Russian and soon took a 5-0 lead in the opening set. On serve, a frustrated Sharapova was in control of the rally and directed an easy smash right toward Serena’s body. The American was very upset and stared at Sharapova near the net.

After that, she yelled the ‘B-word’ at her. This was shown on the giant screen during the point replay and the crowd wouldn’t stop booing Serena after her abuse.

The 2004 Wimbledon final loss was probably the most painful and heartbreaking loss for Serena. In Sharapova’s autobiography, Unstoppable, she disclosed that Serena was very annoyed with her and wasn’t able to digest the fact that she lost to a 17-year-old girl.

“Not long after the tournament, I heard that Serena told a friend — who then told me — ‘I will never lose to that little bitch again,’” Sharapova wrote in her book.
