Coco Gauff currently stands at No. 1 ranking in the doubles category but apparently, she and her doubles partner Jessica Pegula had a rift with their opponents in the first fixture of the US Open. Gauff and Pegula were defeated by Leylah Fernandez and Daria Saville,  3-6 7-5 7-6(5). The American duo were the fan favourite to win the tournament but weren’t able to cross the first hurdle.

The fans witnessed some on-court drama during the match as Pegula accused the umpire of stealing their points. Daria Saville called a ‘let’ when Gauff and Pegula were trailing in the final set at 7-5 – three points away from losing. Coco Gauff had already played her shot but the point did not count due to Saville’s call. Jessica Pegula then got into a heated debate with the chair-umpire and eventually, they lost the match.

After the Umpire’s call, Jessica Pegula walked up to the net and angrily said, “She can’t call let! She [Gauff] has a sitter right on top of the net. You did not call it until she [Saville] stopped. She yelled in the middle of a point, ‘Let!’, you can’t even f***ing do that.” Gauff then came forward too, adding, “You can’t do that.”

Jessica Pegula was still fuming and the teenage star was seen walking away in tears. The duo came into the tournament with great confidence. They won the Canadian Open title in august after defeating Ellen Perez and Nicole Melichar-Martinez. The American duo also achieved the runner-up position at this year’s Roland Garros.

They will be seen playing the singles tournament. Coco Gauff will face another fellow American Madison Keys in the third round of the US Open while Jessica Pegula will battle Yue Yuan. Nevertheless, they were looking to reach another doubles final here at the US Soil but had their dreams crushed in the first round.
