ITIA slaps Halep with a 4 year ban in doping case

“We’re condemning an innocent woman,” Simona Halep receives support from the researcher who conducted her sample’s test, plea falls on deaf ears

Simona Halep

The International Tennis Integrity Agency has banned Simona Halep for a period of 4 years from professional tennis after she failed an anti-doping test. However, Halep has the opportunity to appeal against the decision in the Court of Arbitration for Sport as she feels that she is not guilty of doping.

Her appeal to the CAS comes with a strong alibi and reliable backing by Professor Jean-Claude Alvarez. He is the Director of the toxicology laboratory at the CHU de Garches and is also a judicial expert for the French Supreme Court. He was the one who tested and analysed Halep’s hair and found nothing wrong. Commenting on the verdict passed by the ITIA he said, “We’re condemning an innocent woman.”

Alvarez further added, “Right now, we’re condemning an innocent woman. We’re making a mistake. Given the concentration she has in her hair, it’s not possible for her to be taking roxadustat effectively.” Hopefully with the backing of Professor Alvarez, Simona Halep can produce a worthy appeal at the CAS with enough strong pieces of evidence to cancel her ban.

A lot of people in the tennis World have expressed their agreement with the ITIA, upholding their decision as correct, while many others have sympathised with the 2 time Grand Slam Champion and hope for her to win this battle soon enough to make a comeback on the court as the clock is ticking down on her career.

Serena Williams, the 23-time Grand Slam Champion took a sly dig at Simona Halep after she received a 4 year ban from professional tennis following her failure in an anti-doping test. Williams responded to this by saying, ” 8 is a better number.” which might mean she wants the ban to be doubled. She may also be hinting that she was stopped from winning her 8th Wimbledon title in 2019 when Halep defeated the American 6-2,6-2. She might be indicating that if Halep is stripped of her titles, she deserves that 8th title.
