“We’ve gone from one or two-player dominance to more unpredictability,” Ashleigh Barty opines the strong contemporary playing field in the women’s circuit
Ashleigh Barty
Ashleigh Barty, the 26-year-old former Australian tennis player who retired in the latter stages of March this year while being the number 1 ranked player in the world by the WTA, explained that she didn’t have the drive to play and was not able to challenge herself on the biggest stage anymore.
Barty commented on the current condition of the WTA, appreciating the change in the quality of the players and how there is a variety of players present in the circuit that are fully capable of winning a Grand Slam title, The WTA is often criticized for not having enough variety and diversity and for having a poor standard of play.
“The depth of women’s tennis is excellent at the moment ” Ashleigh Barty comments on the standard of the WTA
Commenting on the standard of the WTA, Barty said, “The depth of women’s tennis is excellent at the moment. We’ve gone from one or two-player dominance to more unpredictability. And it’s not because the circuit is weak. In fact, it is because the circuit is very loud. Everyone in the top 40-50 bracket is so exceptionally good that week after week they could all be in the top 10.”
Barty appreciated the women’s circuits for having more diversity which is a fresh change in scenery for the WTA, the former world number One expects to see the same thing in the future with many different champions, with all the comments surrounding the WTA about the quality of the players, Barty’s opinion brings a lot of hope to the women’s circuit.
After Barty won Wimbledon last year, there have been 3 different grand slam champions in the last 4 majors played. Emma Raducanu won the US Open last year while Iga Swiatek won the French Open this year and Elena Rybakina is the newest grand slam champion on the women’s circuit.
