“What more to expect from these clown-like French people?” Tennis Twitter slams Bercy organizers for not giving Dominic Thiem a wild card into the Paris Masters

Dominic Thiem

2020 US Open champion Dominic Thiem is slowly and steadily getting back on track with each passing day. He suffered a huge blow last year after he suffered a wrist injury which ruled him out of the rest of the season. He returned back on the tour earlier this year during the clay season but didn’t manage to win a single match.

He then started winning and has made it to three tour semifinals this season- the Swiss Open, the Gijon Open, and the European Open. He is currently just one won way from the Top 100 and is playing the Vienna Open on home soil. He came back from the dead to win the opening round match against Tommy Paul and will now face former World No.1, Daniil Medvedev, in the Round of 16 on Thursday.

Thiem was planning to end his season next week at the Paris Masters but to his shock, he didn’t get a wild card to the main draw. Instead, the Bercy organizers gave him a wild card into the qualification round along with three other Frenchmen- Quentin Halys, Hugo Gaston, and Ugo Humbert.

This is the first time that Thiem hasn’t been given a direct wild card to the main draw and this is a bit disrespectful to him, given his stature- a former World No.3, a former US Open champion, and probably the biggest threat to the Big 3.

Fans on social media were enraged by the Paris Masters‘ decision and slammed them for their French bias. All the wild cards are given to Frenchman and Thiem, who has reached two major finals in the same city, didn’t receive one.

It is assumed that if Thiem wins one more match and gets into the Top 100, he may very well finish his season at Vienna and opt out of playing in Bercy.
