“What she did is totally unacceptable,” Agnieszka Radwanska perplexed at Victoria Azarenka’s antics to end her match abruptly at Miami Open

Agnieszka Radwanska and Victoria Azarenka

Victoria Azarenka, the two-time singles Grand Slam champion got eliminated in the Round of 16 at the US Open losing to Czech player Karolina Pliskova. She has been quite inconsistent with her performances lately due to injuries. She was the first Belarusian player to have won a singles Grand Slam title after winning at the Australian Open in 2012.

Azarenka hadn’t put up spectacular performances during the hard-court season facing early-round eliminations despite making it to the quarter-finals at the Citi Open. She couldn’t participate in the grasscourt season due to the ban on Russian and Belarus players owing to the war.

“She has done theater more than once,” Radwanska on Victoria Azarenka last minute walk off

Agnieszka Radwanska, the former tennis player from Poland, expressed her thoughts when Azarenka decided to walk off in the middle of the second-round match at the Miami Open against Linda Fruhvirtova. She was trailing 2-6,0-3 when she decided to retire. Radwanska felt that it was very irresponsible behavior from the Belarusian and it left her completely shocked and puzzled despite not being injured and even denying any assistance in the court.

She said “If I returned to the court after the birth of my son, I would certainly have an even greater distance than I used to be. Do you remember what Azarenka did this year? She has done theater more than once before, faking injuries, etc.”

She added that “I watch her match in Miami, I look and something doesn’t match her. She was losing and just left the court in the middle of the set. I think ‘God, girl’ You’re 33, you’ve got everything on the court, you’re a mom. And you do something like that! It is completely incomprehensible to me.

The three-time US Open finalist Azarenka had expressed her disappointment with the ban on Russian and Belarus players at the 2022 Wimbledon Championship as a missed opportunity to showcase unity in sports. But her actions of pulling out from the exhibition event called ‘Tennis Plays for Peace’ organized by the US Open that was organized for fundraising purposes for those affected by war was highly criticized.
