The first Grand Slam tournament of the year, the Australian Open, is all set to begin in a few days. Melbourne Park is ready as usual to host yet another prestigious tournament from January 16 to January 29, 2023. As expected, fans already have a lot on their plates to talk about the tournament even before it officially starts. The return of Novak Djokovic, current world No. 1, Carlos Alcaraz missing out, and Naomi Osaka withdrawing from the competition are just a few of them.
As always, the most important event before the tournament commences is the draw ceremony. It will take place on 12th January, Thursday at 6 pm AEDT. Melbourne Park is going to host this event, which can be watched live on the tournament’s official YouTube channel. There will be 32 seeds in each men’s and women’s draw, while the rest compete as unseeded. These unseeded also include wildcard professionals like Dominic Thiem, Jason Kubler, etc.
In the absence of Carlos Alcaraz, Rafael Nadal is most likely to take the top seed. Fans and audiences of the sport worldwide would want Rafa and Novak to face in the finals. However, other young players will try to upset the top seeds. But before the commencement of the tournament, there is a charity match too for the people of Ukraine.
How does the Australian Open draw works and what is the prize money?
All four Grand Slam tournaments follow the same pattern in their draw format. There will be 128-player singles draws, out of which the top 32 are given seedings. These seeded players are drawn in such a way that none of them gets to compete with each other until the third round. Also, the top two seeds are placed in different sets in the draw, so that they will get to compete only in the finals.
Currently, the qualifiers for the main draw are going on, which will finish on January 12, 2023. Along with these qualified players, there are a few wild card players as well who get a direct entry into the main draw.
A total of $76.5m AUS (approx £42.74m) is the prize money for the Australian Open 2023. This is a 3.4% increase from the previous year’s prize money. However, only the players reaching the first and second rounds are benefiting. They will see an increase of 3% from last year, while the semi-finalists in both men’s and women’s singles will receive $925,000 AUS (approximately £516,830). The winner of the singles event receives $2.975 million AUS (£1.67 million).
