In her illustrious career, Serena Williams has had many rivalries expanding over three different decades. But her rivalry with Maria Sharapova is not only considered her greatest ever but is also debated to be one of the most iconic rivalries in tennis history. Serena holds a mammoth 20-2 H2H record against Sharapova but their rivalry goes far beyond just numbers.

It all started in 2004 when 17-year-old Maria Sharapova stunned Serena Williams, who was at her peak, in the Wimbledon final. The straight sets loss affected Serena badly and since then, she has been nothing but ruthless toward Sharapova for the next 15 years. Apart from being the greatest rivalry, their rivalry is also considered to be the most one-sided given Serena’s dominance over Sharapova.

Time and again, Serena is questioned about that ‘horrendous’ final. One such incident took place in the 2018 French Open. Serena was drawn to face Sharapova once again in the Round of 16 and ahead of that in the press conference, a journalist reminded Serena of the 2004 Wimbledon loss.

Bill Simons, associated with sports publication Inside Tennis, said that he had the opportunity to interview Donald Trump in 2004 and the former President said that Maria’s shoulders were incredibly alluring which intimidated Serena and hence she lost the match.

“I honestly don’t have any thoughts about that,” she responded holding back her emotions at the stupidity of the question. “I can’t say I have been intimidated by anyone. That’s all. That’s it.”

This wasn’t the first time that Serena lashed out at Bill Simons. The journalist once candidly called her ‘baby’ to Serena’s dislike. “We’re in this together, baby,” he said during the French Open press conference, where he was asking for time for more questions. “No, we’re not,” an annoyed Serena fired back. “You’re not going home to a screaming baby.”
