Frances Tiafoe was born on January 20, 1998, along with his twin brother Franklin, in Maryland to father Constant Tiafoe and mother Alphina Kamara, who had moved from Sierra Leone to the United States fleeing the civil war. In 1999, his father Constant who began working as a day laborer was hired as the on-site custodian after completion of the Junior Tennis Champions Center in Maryland and given a spare office to live in at the center. His mother Alphina worked as a nurse.

Frances and Franklin lived with their father at the center for five days a week for the next 11 years. They took advantage of their living situation to start playing tennis regularly from the age of four. They stayed with their mother when she was not working night shifts as a nurse.

Taifoe spoke proudly about his parents’ struggles and sacrifices to give him the best life possible after he advanced to the semifinal of US Open 2022 and also why that win over Andrey Rublev was so important for his parents more than him. He said “I’m a son of immigrants, as both my parents grew up in Seirra leone, before they came to the States. They met here, had me and my twin brother. My dad, being a maintenance worker at a club, helped to build a club ’99. My mom being a nurse, working two jobs, working overtime through the nights.

“My dad helped build a tennis academy. Once the tennis academy was built, he became the head maintenance guy,” said Tiafoe on The Old Man And The Three podcast. “My dad lived at the tennis center. So, with all those kind of things, it allowed me and my twin brother to be there for free,” he added.
