Qinwen Zheng the 19-year-old tennis player from China has been the breakout star of the French Open 2022. She already caused a major upset by knocking out the former french open winner Simona Halep in the second round. Zheng demonstrated incredible willpower to take down Halep after losing the first set. In the third round, she got the better of the local star, Alize Cornet who retired due to injuries.
Zheng had only made her WTA Tour debut in 2021 and in the 2022 French Open, she has booked a fourth-round clash with the world number 1, Iga Swiatek and she will try to take the fight to an invincible-looking Swiatek. Who is Qinwen Zheng?
Qinwen Zheng tried badminton, basketball, and tennis and then choose tennis as per her liking for the sport. She was enrolled in the tennis academy in Wuhan. After Zheng’s parents saw that she was already the best player in China, they took her to the United States to see if she was ready for a tougher challenge. After her return to China, she eventually relocated to Beijing to train at an academy run by Carlos Rodriguez, the Argentine-Belgian coach.
Zheng was ranked No.630 when she won back-to-back ITF titles in August and September of 2020. By the end of 2021, she had risen to No.126, having won three ITF titles last year. She has won 8 ITF titles.
She is an ambitious young player who has the goal of breaking into the top 30 by the end of the year. She has already improved to number 74 and with her current form, it’s a fairly reasonable target. Zheng will face Swiatek in the fourth round of her debut at the French Open.
