Russian Andrey Rublev is one of the upcoming players of the sport who has had some remarkable performances throughout the year. He is part of the deadly Red Group at the 2022 ATP Finals alongside Novak Djokovic, Stefanos Tsitsipas, and Daniil Medvedev. At the pre-tournament ceremony, he hilariously mocks his presence among the deadly group.
Rublev has already won four ATP titles throughout the year and successfully climbed into the Top 8 rankings for being one of the breakthrough performers with a 49-18 win-loss record this season. One of his remarkable performances was at the Serbia Open when he defeated the 21-time Grand Slam champion in the finals in straight sets to clinch his 9th ATP title. He qualified for the Year-end championship for a consecutive third time.
Djokovic is a 5-time champion, Tsitsipas won the coveted title in 2019 whereas Medvedev won it in 2020 but Rublev is the only one in the group who is yet to win a title. During the media interaction ahead of the start of the tournament in Turin, one of the questions was “We have another very strong group here. Three former champions of the year“. To which, World No 8 was quick to jump into the conversation and hilariously teased at his presence among the former champions of the tournament.
“What am I doing here then, man? I think it’s important to put me in the Green Group. After you said that I’m in a group with three champions here, I thought what am doing there? Why am I in this group? No yeah, not good things I was thinking,” said Andrey Rublev.
Andrey Rublev’s previous campaign at the ATP Finals
The Russian player qualified for the Year-end championship in the year 2020 for the very first time. He defeated the eventual champion, Dominic Thiem, in the round-robin stages but failed to go past the Group stage. In 2021, he was part of the Green Group with Djokovic, Tsitsipas, and US Open finalist Casper Ruud.
He had won just one out of the three matches in the round-robin stages in both the previous years and the win came against the same opponent, the Greek player. Andrey Rublev is yet to qualify for the semi-finals in the history of the ATP Finals. But this year, he aims to better his performance and manage to grab his place in the Final Four as he begins his campaign against Daniil Medvedev.
