Novak Djokovic vs Nick Kyrgios: Preview

Novak Djokovic has undoubtedly been the best player in recent years but the 2022 season hasn’t been that great for him so far. He wasn’t allowed to defend his Australian Open title due to his vaccination status and was deported from the country. He wasn’t allowed to enter the USA for the same reason and had to miss the Golden Swing too. He then had a decent clay season where he made it to the final of the Belgrade Open and won the Rome Masters but then lost in the quarterfinal of the French Open to Rafael Nadal.
This fortnight in Wimbledon, Djokovic has gradually improved his game and got past the likes of Soonwoo Kwon, Thanasi Kokkinakis, and Miomir Kecmanovic in the initial rounds before beating Tim van Rijthoven in the Round of 16. He then survived a tough test from Jannik Sinner in the quarterfinal before beating Cameron Norrie in the semifinals in four sets 2-6,6-3,6-2,6-4 to reach a record 32nd grand slam final.
Uncharacteristically, Nick Kyrgios has been very consistent this season and has managed to use his potential to deliver good results. He pushed Daniil Medvedev to four sets at the Australian Open and then reached the quarterfinals of the Indian Wells Masters where he lost to Rafael Nadal. He then made it to the semifinals at Houston before skipping the clay season. On grass, he reached back-to-back semifinals at Stuttgart and Halle.
In Wimbledon this fortnight, he survived a stern test from Paul Jubb in the first round and then ousted Filip Krajinovic in the second round. He then stunned 4th seed Stefanos Tsitsipas in the third round before surviving yet another 5-setter against Brandon Nakashima. He rallied past Cristian Garin in the quarterfinal and eventually got a walkover from Rafa Nadal in the semis.
This will be the third meeting between the duo. Kyrgios leads the H2H 2-0. They last met at Indian Wells 5 years ago where Kyrgios won in straight sets.
Novak Djokovic vs Nick Kyrgios: Prediction

It is a no-brainer that Djokovic will enter the match as the favorite on paper. He is the 3-tie defending champion and has won 6 titles at Wimbledon in his career. He hasn’t lost a match on centre court in almost 5 years and is playing a record 32nd grand slam final. On the contrary, Kyrgios will be playing his first major final but in the end, given his mindset, it won’t matter. His unorthodox nature and big serve will be the key to his success in the match. He hasn’t even lost a set to Djokovic in their previous two meetings and although this might be the biggest match of his career, he surely knows how to beat the top guns.
As Djokovic said ahead of the final, expect fireworks and lots of drama. The crowd will play a big part in the match as emotions will be on the line other than the golden Gentleman’s Singles Trophy. Expect a thriller with Djokovic winning his 21st grand slam title.
Prediction: Djokovic to win in five tight sets.
