Men’s Singles Draw Preview and Analysis

First Quarter

Holger Rune

Top seed Carlos Alcaraz opens the draw with a match-up against Frenchman Jeremy Chardy. He will be up against another Frenchman in the second round as Alexandre Muller and Arthur Rinderknech go to battle. His third-round opponent could again be a Frenchman if Ugo Humbert makes it that far. Alexander Zverev also features in the draw as he looks to improve his results at the Championships starting against qualifier Gijs Brouwer.

Italians Matteo Berrettini and Lorenzo Sonego also go head-to-head in round one with the winner likely to take on Alex de Minaur. Sixth-seeded Holger Rune starts off against George Loffhagen while tenth-seeded Frances Tiafoe takes on Yibing Wu.

Second Quarter

Cameron Norrie

Third-seeded Daniil Medvedev takes on Arthur Fery to start his campaign as a title over the fortnight will make him the World No. 1 again. He’s joined by 12th-seeded and home favorite Cameron Norrie with the Briton taking on Tomas Machac in the first round. Sebastian Korda, the 22nd seed, takes on Jerry Vesely with eyes on the American following his statement on winning the Championships.

32nd-seeded Ben Shelton takes on lucky loser Taro Daniel while two-time former champ and local hero Andy Murray begins against wildcard entrant Ryan Peniston. Fifth-seeded Stefanos Tsitsipas will lock horns against former US Open winner Dominic Thiem with the winner most likely to take on Murray in back-to-back thrilling matches.

2nd Quarterfinal Prediction: Daniil Medvedev vs Cameron Norrie

Third Quarter

Jannik Sinner

Eight-seeded Jannik Sinner headlines the third quarter with Francisco Cerundolo as his first-round opponent. Ninth-seeded Taylor Fritz takes on Yannick Hanfmann with a second-round clash against Alex Molcan looking certain. 26th-seeded Denis Shapovalov starts off against the qualifier Radu Albot.

Fourth-seeded Casper Ruud starts against qualifier Laurent Lokoli as he reaches the All-England Club without any real match preparation. In a rather dull quarter as compared to the other three, Ruud certainly has a great chance to prove himself on the surface where he has suffered the most.

Third Quarterfinal Prediction: Casper Ruud vs Jannik Sinner

Fourth Quarter

Andrey Rublev

7th seeded Andrey Rublev starts his campaign against Max Purcell with a second round against compatriot Aslan Karatsev looking certain. Last year’s runner-up and 30th-seeded Nick Kyrgios returns to action against wildcard entrant David Goffin while 11th-seeded Felix Auger-Aliassime takes on Filip Krajinovic.

2nd seeded and four-time defending champion Novak Djokovic will start his hunt for his 24th Major against Pedro Cachin. He can expect American Brandon Nakashima in the second round with old foe Stan Wawrinka in the third round if the Swiss make his way. In a star-studded quarter, it will certainly be a thrilling fortnight for the Serb as the entire Tour looks to deny him his fifth consecutive title at the Championships.

Fourth Quarter Prediction: Novak Djokovic vs Andrey Rublev

Semifinals

Carlos Alcaraz
Carlos Alcaraz (Credits: Tennis Net)

Rune and Alcaraz have started a rivalry to look for and Wimbledon would be a great place to continue. But expect Alcaraz to pip the Norwegian only because of the Spaniard’s better momentum winning the Queen’s Club title. Medvedev’s struggles on natural surfaces have been well known and the southpaw Norrie could make good use of it to make the last four.

Sinner should be able to move past Ruud easily but given the Italian’s better performances historically. Similarly, Djokovic would be too big a challenge for the Russian given the Serb’s prowess. Nole’s tunnel vision and hunger for history is anyway going to be a big challenge for any opponent even before they step on the court.

Alcaraz and Norrie could be a good clash given the different styles of each player. But over five sets, Alcaraz’s ability to continue pushing and physically challenge opponents might prove too much for the Briton. Sinner once again will run into the Serbian wall having lost in four sets in last year’s quarter-finals and this year could be no different.

Djokovic’s odds of winning the Wimbledon this year are outright in his favor. Alcaraz might have momentum with him and better preparations as compared to Djokovic who played only the Giorgio Armani Tennis Classic, the Serb will be too big a challenge for the Spaniard to upset him at the Championships.
