The oldest tournament of tennis, the Wimbledon Championships which starts next week will have a new artificial intelligence-powered commentary. The England Club management has cracked a deal with IBM in order to make audio commentary and captions for the gameplay highlights. According to IBM, this all-new feature will allow tennis fans all across the world to access all sorts of video highlights through the Wimbledon app.
This technology will remove the need and hardships of having a human being providing commentary during the match, as this AI-powered technology will serve this purpose and thereby produce subtitles for the highlight videos.
Kevin Farrar, Lead of the IBM Academic Initiative & IBM Global Entrepreneur said, “You can’t replace John McEnroe doing commentary. I see AI as very much complementing the human element, rather than replacing. That human element always needs to be there.”
This new technology will also help to resolve and determine “anomalies” thereby anticipating all potential shortcomings and also predicting a player’s chances in the tournament. This new AI technology has the ability to determine how far down the tournament a particular player advances and the probable opponents they might face in the final.
What did Alex Blackman have to say about Wimbledon’s new technology?
GameOn Technology CEO Alex Beckman was in full praise of this technology saying that this new implementation has a great proven track record of enhancing engagement. He said, “Using artificial intelligence to bring highlights to fans …we have a lot of experience and evidence that catering to the end user, using AI to deliver highlights, does increase engagement in a really fantastic way.”
He added, “We see a 400 percent increase in engagement when with our NBA videos and highlights from people watching the NBA playoffs at home through chat and the use of personalization.” He also talked about the use of AI in highlights, “There are 27% click-through rates across ticketing when you combine AI and highlights. In a format like social, you can see higher engagement rates and happier fans having better experiences.”
This marks the start of one of the biggest turnarounds in the sport’s history and only time will tell if it will open the door for something even more jaw-dropping in the future.
