Daniil Medvedev at Indian Wells Masters
In just five weeks, Daniil Medvedev has made it to his fourth ATP final. The Russian tennis player, who is currently in excellent form, secured his place in the title match at Indian Wells after defeating Frances Tiafoe in the semi-finals with a score of 7-5, 7-6. This will be Medvedev’s first final in the desert. With 19 consecutive victories under his belt since Rotterdam, he is now aiming to clinch his fourth consecutive title by facing off against Carlos Alcaraz on Sunday’s final.
After overcoming several challenges in the second set’s closing stages, Medvedev has made it to his first Masters 1000 final since Paris 2021, defeating the home star. The Russian tennis player impressively managed to hold his serve for nine consecutive times, leading to a 7-5, 5-3 advantage.
Medvedev was informed about his latest record matching with Andy Murray. The Russian was surprised and said, “Wow. I didn’t know this. Because for sure I like these stats, especially when you do well. Like, you don’t want to be the one who lost the most matches in a row on the ATP Tour or something like this. So for sure when you do well and then you hear some of these stats, it’s just great, but at the same time, I know that it comes with wins.”
He continued and said, “So first and the most important part is to win. Once you win, you never want to stop. No matter which record maybe I broke or made even or first one, yeah, since 2016 to go in four finals, I just want to win tomorrow. Yeah, it’s just great sometimes when you beat some records or become World No. 1 or win a slam that you know that when you’re 70 you can still say, Yeah, I remember the year when I made four finals in a row. But in the moment, it doesn’t matter for me. The most important is to try to win this tournament and to win these matches.”

As Novak Djokovic is ineligible to participate in the United States due to his vaccination status, the 2023 ATP Indian Wells Open has secured an exciting final. The clash features the US Open 2021 champion against last year’s New York winner, making it a must-see match-up. What adds to the excitement is that neither player has won an Indian Wells title yet, making the final even more unpredictable.
Despite complaining about the speed of the courts, Medvedev made adjustments accordingly and is confident again. Alcaraz on the other hand is having a target in his mind to reclaim the top spot. Many experts believed that these two are currently in their best forms and are very likely to meet in the finals.
Carlos Alcaraz and Daniil Medvedev have only faced off against each other once before. Their previous encounter was at Wimbledon in 2021, where the Russian emerged victorious in a one-sided yet entertaining match. However, the conditions at Indian Wells are vastly different, and for the 19-year-old Alcaraz, two years seems like an eternity given the tremendous progress he has made since then.
