Men’s Singles Draw Preview

Top Half

After a disappointing clay-court leg before the French Open, Anett Kontaveit would like to make amends in Hamburg as she headlines the top half of the draw. She will open her campaign against Irina Bara and will then face either Rebecca Peterson or Kateryna Baindl in the Round of 16. She is drawn opposite Andrea Petkovic who opens against fellow countrywoman Tamara Korpatsch. Japanese Misaki Doi will take on Oksana Selekhmeteva in the first round and is expected to meet Petkovic in the second round.

2021 French Open champion Barbora Krejcikova will face Suzan Lamens in the first round and will then face either Magdalena Frech or Anna Kalinskaya in the Round of 16. 6th seed Varvara Gracheva also is placed in the top half and will face Anastasia Potapova in the opening round. The winner of the match will face either Maria Carle or Eva Lys. Gracheva and Krejcikova are expected to meet in the last 8.

1st Semifinal Prediction: Anett Kontaveit vs Barbora Krejcikova

Bottom Half

Daria Kasatkina will headline the bottom half of the draw and will face clay-courter Katerina Siniakova in a tough first-round battle. The winner will face Brazilian Laura Pigossi in the Round of 16. 9th seed Elena-Gabriela Ruse will open her campaign against in form Bernarda Pera. Either Ruse or Pera will face the winner of the match between Joanne Zuger and Jule Niemeier.

4th seed Aliaksandra Sasnovich will be up against Nastasja Schunk in the opening round with the winner taking on either Aleksandra Krunic or former Wimbledon finalist Sabine Lisicki. 7th seed Maryna Zanevska will lock horns against Viktoriya Tomova in the first round and will face either Nao Hibino or Alexandra Cadanta-Ignatik in the Round of 16.

2nd Semifinal Prediction: Bernarda Pera vs Daria Kasatkina

Semifinal

In probably the match of the tournament, Anett Kontaveit will face Barbora Krejcikova in the first semifinal. Both Kontaveit and Krejcikova are amongst the best in the world and have tasted silverware on the big stage. Despite Krejcikova being a better clay-court player, she doesn’t have the form to back it up and hence expect Kontaveit to make it to the final.

The second semifinal will be played between Bernarda Pera and Daria Kasatkina. Pera is coming off a title triumph last week and hence expect a thrilling match with a lot of baseline intense exchanges. Pera may just edge past her opponent to book a place in a second consecutive tour final.

Final

The 2022 Hamburg European Open final will be played between top seed Anett Kontaveit and Hungarian Open champion Bernarda Pera. Kontaveit will be the favorite but Pera has the recent form to back her claim. Having said that, the Estonian is expected to win the title in Hamburg.
