Roger Federer

The upcoming Laver Cup will be Roger Federer‘s last professional tennis tournament. Federer took to social media a few days ago to announce that he will retire from tennis after the Laver Cup. The surgery he underwent last year wasn’t 100% successful and hence he wouldn’t be able to compete at the highest level with the required intensity. And given he is 41, it is probably the right call.

For the first time ever, the Big 4- Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, and Andy Murray will be competing on the same team. They will compete for Team Europe in the O2 arena in London starting from September 23. The stakes were already high before Federer’s retirement given that 4 greats of this generation were competing together. But after Federer announced his retirement and revealed that the Laver Cup will be his last tournament, the tournament’s buzz has grown exponentially over the last few days.

And this hype is reflected in the ticket prices of the tournament. After the Swiss maestro’s retirement, the prices of the resale tickets have gone up around 10x to 45x. The tickets that originally cost around £1000 have now become £15340. The highest resale price of the tickets is a mammoth £45090 for just 2 tickets.

Fans all over the world want to see Federer play for one last time and are very excited about the prospect of seeing him play in the O2 Arena. But the high ticket prices have frustrated the fans because not everyone will be able to afford them. They expressed their concerns on social media and also accused the Laver Cup of making money from Federer’s retirement and playing with the fans’ sentiments.
