“You are writing a beautiful story. I will be rooting for you” Football legend Pele praises Beatriz Haddad Maia ahead of the Canadian Open final
Pele and Beatriz Haddad Maia
Beatriz Haddad Maia reached the finals of the Canadian Open and became the first Brazilian woman ever to reach a WTA 1000 final. She defeated Karolina Pliskova in straight sets in the semi-final clash to reach her first WTA 1000 finals where she will face Simona Halep, a two-time Canadian Open champion. Haddad Maia had a great hard-court season where she defeated Martina Trevisan in the opening round followed up by defeating the US Open runner-up Leylah Fernandez. She did the inevitable when she defeated World No.1 Iga Swiatek in the Round of 16 and Belinda Bencic in the quarter-finals.
The Brazilian did not have a great start to the year with early-round exits at the WTA 125k levels until the clay season where she lost in the second round. She has already registered 18 out of her 21 matches along with her wins at the Nottingham Open and at the Birmingham Classic. She did not have a good run at the 2022 Wimbledon Championship despite a good warm-up in the grass tournaments as she got knocked out in the first round.
“I want to congratulate her on her beautiful journey” Pele on Beatriz Haddad Maia’s achievements
Pele regarded as one of the greatest football players of Brazil with 77 goals in 92 games, recently shared his views on his compatriot on his social media account on Instagram where he congratulated Beatriz Haddad Maia for making it to the finals of the Canadian Open and getting recognition for their country in the world of tennis. I want to congratulate @biahaddadmaia for reaching Toronto @wta 1000 final, but above that, for the beautiful journey so far.“
He even went on to reveal that he will be rooting for her to win the final against Halep as she had already defeated the Romanian in their last meeting at the Birmingham Classic semi-final clash. He also stated that she has etched a beautiful journey in her career and hopes her to reach new heights of success while making their country proud. He further added “I’ll be rooting for you today. You are writing a beautiful story.”
