Currently ranked 94th in the world, Nick Kyrgios is one of the most controversial personalities on the Tour. Apart from being one of the most talented players, he has also found himself in a variety of incidents that has seen him being involved in fights and arguments not only with his opponents but the tournament officials and chair umpires too.

Very recently during the ‘Sunshine Double’ of the Tour, Kyrgios paid massive fines in both the Indian Wells and Miami tournaments for smashing his racquet and displaying ‘unsportsmanlike conduct’ during his defeats in the tournaments. In total, Nick paid $60,000 in fines during the two tournament stay in the USA.

With ATP planning to take stricter actions for these types of incidents, former World No. 4 and 1996 Australian Open runner-up Anke Huber talks about how the actions of Nick are damaging the sport and drew comparison with American great John McEnroe who was also a short-tempered persona often finding himself in fights with the officials.

“Kyrgios pulls off this show – like McEnroe before – often on purpose. It’s his ploy to keep the conversation going. But I don’t know if you should wish that for women’s tennis. Granted, it makes things more interesting. But I think an Emma Raducanu is more effective in women’s tennis,” said Huber speaking with Eurosport Germany.

“A limit must be set” Anke Huber on incidents similar to Nick Kyrgios’s outburst

Within the first three months of the Tour, there have been many incidents revolving around the conduct of the players on the court. Not only Nick Kyrgios but players like Alexander Zverev, Denis Shapovalov and even the US Open champion Daniil Medvedev have been fined huge amounts for their behaviour on the court.

“From my point of view, the whole thing is also due to our free way of bringing up children. That is reflected on the pitch. The respect has become less – but that’s a general problem. The question is how the associations will continue to handle this. You can’t let and allow certain behaviours like that. A limit must be set!” concluded Huber.
