Kei Nishikori had a tough battle to fight in the first round when he took on Serbian Miomir Kecmanovic in the 1st round. The Japanese won the match 6-4, 6-7(5), 6-2 in 2 hours and 7 minutes in a tough match. Nishikori has however been on a good run since the focus shifted to Hardcourts as he made it to the quarter-finals at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and then reached the semis of the 2021 Washington Open.

Hubert Hurkacz will be back on the ATP Tour for the first time since his 2nd round exit at the Tokyo Olympics. The Polish received a bye in the first round given his seeding and will begin the US Open Leg of the tour against Nishikori in the 2nd round in Toronto. The Pole last played on a Hardcourt match of the ATP Tour at the 2021 Miami Masters where he emerged as the champion.

This will be the 3rd meeting between the duo and the first since 2019. Both of the previous two meetings have taken place on the hardcourts and Hurkacz got better of the Japanese veteran on both occasions in 3-sets to lead the head-to-head tie 2-0.

Nishikori will come into the tie with a career Hardcourt record of 272-128 and a season record of 12-7 on the surface. His overall season record is 23-15 across all surfaces. Hubert will take the court with a career Hardcourt record of 120-55 and a season record of 14-4 on the surface having gone 21-13 in the season across all surfaces.

While both the players or on opposite ends of the tour experience, Hubert seems the favourite only on the basis of his form on Hardcourts this season. Having said that, it won’t be an easy win for the Polish as Nishikori will make him work for the points and the match could be one of the thrilling 3-setters of the week.

Prediction: Hubert Hurkacz to win in 3-sets.
