Kei Nishikori comes into the match after having fallen to Novak Djokovic in the quarter final of the 2020 Olympics in straight sets 6-2, 6-0. He also had a below par Wimbledon, in which he went out in the second round at the hands of Australian Jordan Thompson in 4 sets.

American Sam Querrey comes into the clash completely out of form in all the recent singles events. He has been knocked out in the first round of the Atlanta Open, Los Cabos Open, Hall of Fame Championships, reaching the second round at Wimbledon although he made a run to the final of the Mallorca Open, losing to first seed Daniil Medvedev in straight sets.

This will be the pair’s 5th meeting and they have surprisingly never met at a Grand Slam in either of the 4. The head to head stands at an even 2-2. The most recent meeting was at the 2018 Shanghai Masters, a match in which the Japanese came out victorious in straight sets 7-6, 4-6.

Kei hasn’t been incredibly consistent either but he has surely been in better form than Querrey and although the difference in rankings doesn’t show much of a difference either, recent results surely do and hence the Japanese enters the first round clash as clear favourite.
