“No offense but his behavior is like someone that can’t really handle the pressure too well,” Naomi Osaka draws parallels with Nick Kyrgios by emphasizing with him over brain fade moment
Naomi Osaka and Nick Kyrgios
Naomi Osaka has had a poor start to the new season, after a disappointing title defense in the Australian Open 2022 exiting in the third round, she then went crashing out of the Indian Wells Open 2022 in the second round.
It became worse for her in the Indian Wells Open, as the former champion Naomi Osaka was heckled by the crowd during her match that saw the Japanese superstar break down in tears amidst the match. Playing against Veronika Kudermetova, Naomi lost the match 0-6, 4-6 but despite the good tennis played by the players, the heckling incident overshadowed the sport.
Naomi Osaka reveals Nick Kyrgios is like a brother to her
Naomi Osaka raced to a second quarter-final of the season in Miami with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Alison Riske on Sunday. The Japanese player faced a couple of early exits in Melbourne and at Indian Wells, but has found a resurgence in form in the last couple of weeks.
During her post-match conference, Osaka was asked to talk about her relationship with Australian pro, Nick Kyrgios, who, like the 24-year-old, has been vocal about his struggles with mental health in the past. In his own conference, Kyrgios admitted that he could empathize with Osaka when she abruptly withdrew from the 2021 Roland Garros to protect her mental health.
“I don’t know if he wants me to even talk about this, but I would say probably after US Open or something, he reached out….I would say he’s a nice guy, very polite, and we have talked about stuff like that but not really deep kind of,” said Osaka about her relationship with Kyrgios.
The Japanese school further revealed that the Aussie superstar was like a brother to her since both her behaviors were similar.
“When I was coming on tour, or watching him because he’s been on tour long enough, I kind of thought like he was my brother. Like we kind of look the same to me. I don’t know. And I always felt like his behavior was kind of like, I’m not trying to be offensive, like, someone that can’t really handle the pressure too well, so they are kind of overwhelmed,” Osaka added.
