Daniil Medvedev and Serena Williams

It is no doubt that Daniil Medvedev is one of the best players currently on the tour. Along with his on-court performances, the big Russian has also built a reputation for his volatile temper throughout his career. Medvedev has lost his temper on court multiple times throughout the years.

In this Australian Open too, Medvedev has lost it a few times and has had frosty moments during the tournament. The World No.2 sarcastically applauded the crowd for booing him during the Final against Rafael Nadal, yelled at the chair umpire during his match against Stefanos Tsitsipas, and even called the person operating the Big TV in the stadium an idiot in one of the matches.

Daniil Medvedev’s angry rant at the chair-umpire during his 2022 Australian Open semifinal encounter against Stefanos Tsitsipas has brought the Russian under a lot of heat recently. After celebrities such as John McEnroe presented their views on the controversial incident, Serena Williams’ husband Alexis Ohanian too joined in to drop his views.

The 38-year-old took to Twitter to recall the strong on and off-court reactions to Williams’ outburst – which included a game penalty, media outrage, and satirical cartoons at the chair umpire during her match against Naomi Osaka in the 2018 US Open final. Ohanian’s tweet, which had a subtle hint of allegations of racism against the tennis fraternity, went on to question why only white players like Medvedev get away with such incidents, while Serena was punished.

He also expressed disappointment at the apparent silence of media houses on Medvedev’s behavior, saying that media outrage seemed to apply only to specific races of people. The American didn’t directly criticize Medvedev, instead focussing his criticism on the tennis fraternity and the media houses.

“A penalty… media outrage… satirical cartoons… those are all coming, right? No, of course, they’re not. (I have no problem w players yelling at umpires — but let them *all* do it — not just the white guys),” Ohanian wrote in his Twitter post.
