In one of the biggest upsets of the ongoing Australian Open 2021, 14th seed Simona Halep crashed out of the tournament after her 3-set defeat by World No.61 Alize Cornet in the fourth round. The 2 hours and 33 minutes long contest finished 4-6,6-3,4-6.
This was Cornet’s third straight win over the former World No.1 Romanian on a hot morning in Melbourne. With the win, she booked a place in the quarter-finals, where she would face American Danielle Collins.
Halep leaves a message for Australians post her exit

Post her defeat in the fourth round on Monday, Simona Halep was gracious and sporting enough to leave a few words for the crowd and her fans who came to support her at her matches. The 30 year old thanked the country of Australia and it’s citizens, and revealed that she was looking forward to come back at the tournament next year. Halep said that it was only positives that she took away from her time at the tournament.
“Australia, you were beautiful. I take only the positives away from my time here. I can’t wait to be back next here.”– tweeted Halep.
Many top players would have sulked and stormed off home after a defeat like Halep faced. However, that fact that she took out time to be gracious enough to have kind words for the people and the tournament shows what an amazing person she is and why she garners such respect in the world of tennis.
