World No.1 Novak Djokovic is all geared up to put an end to his incredible 2021 at the US Open. A remarkable journey which started at the Australian Open in Melbourne might come to a close in New York in the next few weeks.

Despite missing out on winning any medal for Serbia in the recently concluded Tokyo Games, Djokovic now turns his attention towards winning the final Slam of the year, and in the process achieving the rare feat of a Grand Slam.

It is not to be forgotten that the 34-year-old has a golden chance to become only the second man in the Open Era, after Rod Laver (1969) to win a Calendar Slam.

Although the 20-time Grand Slam champion missed warm-up tournaments in Toronto and Cincinnati, he got his first practice session underway at the Arthur Ashe Stadium, in the USTA facility.

The Serbian superstar didn’t waste time to get his preparations going for the US Open as he hit with friend and (PTPA) partner Vasek Pospisil of Canada. Both players indulged in an intense session and in the end, Pospisil was seen profusely sweating.

While many experts and former players are backing Djokovic to create history, it is not to be forgotten that despite his hard court skills, he has only won the US Open on three occasions.

Novak was disqualified in 2020

Just when it appeared he had no challenger sight in 2020, the three-time champion was disqualified from the Championships last year, after he unintentionally fired the ball at an official’s throat.

If the top-ranked Djokovic captures his fourth title in New York, he will become only the third men’s player in history after Rod Laver and Don Budge to win a Calendar Slam. On the women’s side, Maureen Connolly, Steffi Graf and Margaret Court have managed to pull of the coveted feat.
