“Beyond Proud of WTA”: Novak Djokovic to Billie Jean King; top tennis stars hail WTA’s decision to suspend all tennis activities in China over Peng Shuai Case
Peng Shuai
China tried misguiding the world into believing that Peng Shuai is completely safe. They came up with ways of manufacturing evidence that can hide the truth. However, much to their disappointment, world leaders and the general public have collectively called them out for their blatant human rights abuse.
Earlier, tennis stars and top leaders were pressurizing China to issue a clarification on the Peng Shai case. In reply, the Chinese government issued a letter, allegedly written by Peng to the WTA Chairman which stated that the tennis star is absolutely fine. They also organized a video call between Peng and Thomas Bach which was also not accepted as credible evidence.
“I am announcing the immediate suspension of all WTA tournaments in China”: WTA Chairman
Moreover, now WTA has decided to take a strong step to sideline China at a global level so that they can be forced to tell the truth, or at least launch an investigation into the matter. In a statement, WTA made it very clear that they have decided to suspend all WTA tournaments in China and Hong Kong.
“With the full support of the WTA Board of Directors, I am announcing the immediate suspension of all WTA tournaments in China, including Hong Kong,” the statement read. “If powerful people can suppress the voices of women and sweep allegations of sexual assault under the rug, then the basis on which the WTA was founded – equality for women – would suffer an immense setback,” it further read.
WTA’s stance on the issue has been very clear since the news broke. They categorically denied all evidence issued by China and tried establishing contact with Shuai for confirmation. After repeated failed attempts, WTA finally decided to hold the Chinese authorities accountable for their actions. Since the WTA’s statement came out, several tennis stars like Novak Djokovic, Tennys Sandgren, Chris Evert, and others have come out in it’s support.
