Novak Djokovic equals Martina Navratilova’s record, enters 332nd week as the World No.1
Novak Djokovic
World No.1 Novak Djokovic might have not won a single medal for his country in the ongoing 2020 Tokyo games. The Serb even expressed his disappointment at returning home empty handed.
However, Djokovic also mentioned recently on how he is still keen on fulfilling his dream for his country at the 2024 Olympics on the clay of Paris.
Meanwhile, the 20-time Grand Slam champion will be pleased with the fact that he now entered his 332nd week as the World No.1 player and in the process, ties legendary Martina Navratilova, who also held the top perch in women’s tennis for 332 weeks.
Moving forward, Djokovic might be tempted to even surpass German legend Steffi Graf’s record of 377 weeks as the top-ranked player. Given Djokovic’s motivation and fitness, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see the 34-year-old shattering another long-standing record.
Djokovic overtook Federer earlier this year
Earlier in the year, Djokovic managed to pip the record of Roger Federer’s 310 weeks as the World No.1 in the men’s game and since then has been experiencing a winning juggernaut at all the Grand Slams.
Having won the first three Slams of the year, Djokovic will be eyeing the Calendar Slam in New York. If he achieves the almost unthinkable, the Serb will become the only player after the great Rod Laver to win all four Slams for the Calendar year in the Open Era.
World No.3 and rival, Rafael Nadal too opined in the affirmative when quizzed about Djokovic’s chances in New York.
“He’s already won three, so when you win three, you can win four, without a doubt,” he added. “He’s going to be playing on hardcourts, probably his best surface, so why not? Of course it’s something difficult. [There are] going to be other guys that want to achieve the last Slam of the season. But of course he’s one of the clear favorites.”
Djokovic will return to the hard courts in Cincinnati, before he heads to the US Open to create history.
