“Novak Djokovic has blood boiling in his veins” Italian veteran and close friend of Novak reveals what is the Serbian’s motivation for the season

World No. 1 Novak Djokovic will be returning to tennis action soon after having faced a lot of difficulties in the month of January. With the Serbian expected to lead his country at the 2022 ATP Cup, he withdrew his name just days before the tournament began and hoping to enter the country for the 2022 Australian Open, he had to miss the Grand Slam after his visa was cancelled twice in two weeks.
In a stay of 10 days in Australia, the Serbian spent nearly 5 of those days in a federal quarantine centre as his team of lawyers battled his case in the Australian court. With Djokovic being the 3-time defending champion and a record 9-time champion at Melbourne, the circumstances of his dismissal were not well received by his fans and the player himself was disappointed as he expressed after the verdict that ruled his deportation.
As Djokovic’s comeback gets nearer, former Australian Open doubles winner and a close friend of Djokovic, Italian veteran Fabio Fognini spoke on what is the motivation for the 20-time Grand Slam champion going ahead into the season.
“Knowing him, I think he has blood boiling in his veins. On the one hand, he must be almost happy, because it is the challenges that give him motivation. He must have thought: ‘Bravo, you won…See you in Paris’. He’s very competitive, he’s proven that over the years. But Rafa, if he wants to, can also win Roland‐Garros and achieve 22 Grand Slam titles,” said Fognini speaking with La Gazzetta Dello Sport.
Novak Djokovic to return to action later this month
Djokovic will finally make his season debut this month at the ATP-500 Dubai Championships where the Serbian is a 5-time champion having won his 5th title in 2020. With only 900 points separating Djokovic and World No. 2 Daniil Medvedev, Novak needs to return to action and add to his tally in order to protect his position at the top where he has now spent more than 350 weeks.
With Rafael Nadal having taken the lead in the race for most Grand Slam titles with 21 to his name, Djokovic will have a task at his hand at the 2022 French Open where he will be the defending champion this year while Nadal boast a record of 13 titles at Roland Garros and is always the favourite going into the tournament.
