Novak Djokovic overtakes Federer and Nadal in THIS record, jumps to 2nd on the all-time list

World No. 1 Novak Djokovic had one of the best seasons in 2021 when he went on to win 3 Slams and almost won the Calendar Slam had it not been for World No. 2 Daniil Medvedev who defeated the Serbian in the finals of the 2021 US Open denying him the chance to claim all 4 Slams in the calendar year, a feat achieved only once on the ATP Tour in the Open Era.
Novak played 62 matches in 2021 of which he went on to win 55 and lost just 7. Apart from a 3rd round exit from the 2021 Monte Carlo Masters, he reached the semi-finals of all events. He lost in the semis of the Belgrade Open, Tokyo Olympics and the ATP Finals. He finished runner-up twice this season, first at the Rome Masters and then at the US Open.
Of his 55 wins this season, 5 came in the finals. His titles this year include the Australian Open, Serbian Open, French Open, Wimbledon and the Paris Masters, making him the joint-2nd most successful player in terms of titles won this season on the ATP Tour.
This successful season takes his season win percentage to 88.70, his 11th consecutive season where he won more than 80% of his matches. With an 11th consecutive season, he now overtakes his fellow Big-3 members Roger Federer (2003-2012) and Rafael Nadal (2005-2014) who were both tied on 10 seasons with more than 80% wins.
Novak now sits 2nd behind Jimmy Connors who had 12 consecutive seasons between 1973-1984 with a winning percentage greater than 80% and looking at the form Novak was in the 2021 season, he might just match the American great’s tally and would possibly look to better in the subsequent seasons.
2021 season was Novak Djokovic’s 3rd best in terms of least number of matches lost
With just 7 defeats this year, this is Novak’s 3rd best tally when he has played more than 50 matches in the season. His best tally came in the 2011 season when he had a record of 70-6 as he won 3 Grand Slams that year and also finished the year as World No. 1 for the first time in his career.
His second-best season came in 2015 when he finished the season with an 82-6 record when he won all Slams except the French Open that year losing to Stan Wawrinka in the finals. In terms of the matches won, the 2015 season remains his best-ever season.
