World No. 1 Novak Djokovic‘s 2021 season finally came to an end with Serbia losing in the semi-finals of the 2021 Davis Cup Finals. While Novak remained unbeaten in the singles matches this week in the Finals, he lost in the doubles clash with compatriot Filip Krajinovic as they lost in straight-sets to the Croatian pair of Nikola Mektic and Mate Pavic and were knocked out from the tournament.
With his season now ended, the focus now completely shifts to his decision to participate in the upcoming 2022 Australian Open which has made vaccination compulsory for all players, spectators and staff members. Novak has refused to comment on his vaccination status citing it is a very personal decision and he does not wish to disclose whether he has been vaccinated or not.
With a strict vaccination policy in place that could see the Serbian miss one of his most successful Slam where he is currently the 3-time defending champion, there is no other option for Novak other than to reveal his status of vaccination or else miss the first Slam of the next season.
Speaking about the saga revolving around his vaccination, Novak refused to comment anything about it after Serbia was defeated in the semi-finals. Speaking with the press, Novak said, “Honestly, I will try to use the next few days to recover well, completely forget about tennis and renew my energy.
“I’ve been very, very tired all season, exhausted, so now I have to focus on a time to spend some quality time with my family. Then we’ll see what the future holds. I know what you want to know, but tonight I’m not going to talk about it. You will be informed of my decision very soon, but I cannot tell you a precise date,” said the 20-time Grand Slam champion.
Novak Djokovic ends the season with a 55-7 record
With 3 Grand Slam titles, 1 masters title in Paris and a tour-level title in Serbia along with runner-up finishes in Rome Masters and the US Open, Novak ends the season with a 55-7 record, his 2nd best tally for a season in terms of matches won since 2017.
With a month to relax now, Novak will now have his eyes set on his 21st Grand Slam and will be the defending champion at the next 3 Slams in Australia, Roland Garros and Wimbledon.
