World No.1 Novak Djokovic is chasing history at Arthur Ashe Stadium in the final of the 2021 US Open. He is just a win away from a historic calendar slam and in doing so, will take the all-time grand slam lead. He is up against World No.2 Daniil Medvedev, another in form player.
Djokovic entered the final as the favorite but thinking about what’s at stake surely made him a bit nervous. His legs were cold at the start which cost him an early break as Medvedev took a 2-0 lead. Djokovic played good tennis for the remainder of the set but wasn’t able to get the break back and lost the set 4-6.
Medvedev had all the momentum and carried it into the second set. He was playing the match of his life and was hitting winners left, right and centre. He was pushing Djokovic to his limits on his service games which frustrated Djokovic. The Serb often loses his temper during matches and for the first time this fortnight, Djokovic lost his cool.
Djokovic loses his cool
During Medvedev’s second service game, Djokovic had break points but to his frustration couldn’t convert it. He was close to smashing his racquet towards a ball boy but stopped midway. If he would’ve hit the ball boy, he would’ve once again be defaulted like last year.
But he lost his cool in the very next point, smashing the racquet in frustration after losing the point. He got warning eventually for racquet abuse. He then lost his serve the very next game and also lost the set 4-6.
The release of frustration didn’t help him either as he went on to lose the match in straight sets.
