‘I have absolutely no idea on when and where I am going to play next,’ says Novak Djokovic

World No.1 Novak Djokovic’s dream of realizing the Calendar Slam for the year was shattered by World No.2 Daniil Medvedev in the finals of the 2021 US Open.
Not only did the Russian stop the Serb from winning his 21st Grand Slam, but he also stopped the Serb’s winning streak of 27 matches at the Grand Slams. Looking back, it was arguably Medvedev’s most clinical performance at the deep end of a Major, en-route to his maiden Grand Slam title.
While we expect the newly crowned US Open champion to show up at the next big ATP tournaments in Indian Wells, Bercy and WTF (Turin), the appearance of the 20-time Grand Slam champion remains unclear.
Speaking to the Serbian media after his gut-wrenching loss in New York, Djokovic didn’t share any plans about the remaining part of the season. “Let me tell you – I have no plan, absolutely nothing. I don’t know if I’m going to play anything, anywhere… I’m just here in New York right now,” the 34-year-old told SportKlub.
Djokovic further explained to the Serbian media that his return of serve in the finals was not up to the mark, especially given how his opponent was serving.
“I felt that I was slower and that I was missing half a step – especially on my return, which is one of my most important shots – with the indisputable fact that he served great today. This made my work even more difficult,” the three-time US Open champion explained.
Regret on stumbling at the final hurdle

Before signing off, Djokovic also remarked that although there will be a regret of faltering at the last hurdle, he was pleased with his effort in New York, despite a demanding season on the court.
“In the end, there remains that regret for this match – but, on the other hand, also gratitude and pride for everything that has been done here,” he said.
