World No.1 Novak Djokovic has withdrawn from the 2021 Indian Wells Masters, the tournament confirmed. It was speculated post the US Open that Djokovic won’t be travelling to the desert for a one off tournament and hence the news doesn’t come as a surprise.

Djokovic, who has had a very happening and tight season, will want to take some time off the tennis court to rest and regroup. He won the first three majors of the year before losing the US Open final to Daniil Medvedev. The Serb was carrying a lot of expectations in the final and when things didn’t go his way, he was visibly emotional.

Djokovic didn’t have much points to defend at Indian Wells and has virtually secured the year end No.1 ranking. Hence it makes perfect sense for Djokovic to skip the tournament and get his head space right.

In a statement to the tournament, Djokovic apologized to the fans and hoped to see them next year. He said: “I am sorry I won’t get to see my fans in Indian Wells and play in the desert, my favourite place to go. I hope to see you next year!”
