“Djokovic’s words after his defeat at the Olympics helped me more than those of my psychologist,” says Daniil Medvedev
Novak Djokovic and Daniil Medvedev
World No. 2 Daniil Medvedev recently defeated the Serb, Novak Djokovic at the US Open to capture his first Grand Slam championship. He has now revealed to working with a psychologist during the tournament at Flushing Meadows, but he found the comments of the world No. 1 following his Olympic loss earlier this summer to be more motivating.
The world No. 1 was attempting to win the Calendar Grand Slam for the first time in 52 years, as well as the first player in history to win a record 21st Major. He came within one match of rewriting the world record, but the Russian got the best of him in the US Open final, winning 6-4 6-4 6-4.
It was Medvedev‘s first Grand Slam triumph in three tries, having reached the final of the US Open in 2019, coming back from two sets down to force a tiebreaker against Rafael Nadal before losing, and falling in straight sets to Djokovic at the Australian Open this year.
Medvedev in all praises for Djokovic
The world No. 2 has recently revealed that he has been working with a psychologist, but that it was his opponent’s remarks that motivated him the most
“During the US Open I worked a lot with a psychologist. She’s trying to help me,” he said. “But Djokovic’s words after his defeat at the Olympics helped me more than those of my psychologist, when he said that we could not go back in tennis, that all the defeats at the Olympics had made him stronger for the following tournaments.”
Medvedev was a choice to win a medal in Tokyo earlier this year, but he succumbed in the quarter-finals against Spain’s Pablo Carreno Busta 6-2 7-6(5). Next up, Medvedev will compete at Paris Masters where he’ll look to defend his title.
