‘She needs to learn how to manage fame’: Marion Bartoli, journalists Simon Cambers and Carole Bouchard on Naomi Osaka’s current ordeal
Marion Bartoli and Naomi Osaka
Naomi Osaka has made a name for herself in the world of tennis. When the Japanese burst onto the scene, the world admired her for playing some high-quality tennis. She defeated some of the biggest names in tennis to lift one trophy after the other.
However, the last few months haven’t been the best for the superstar from Japan. The whole fiasco started when Osaka refused to face the media at the French Open which attracted penalties from the authorities. Post that, the world was shocked when she decided to withdraw from the tournament midway and after that point, things have only gone downhill for her.
‘Her agent is not doing a very good job of keeping her grounded’: Simon Cambers on Naomi Osaka
In a recent episode of Tennis Majors Match points, former Wimbledon champion Marion Bartoli, journalists Simon Cambers and Carole Bouchard had a few things to say about Naomi Osaka’s current situation. Bartoli claimed that when a player represents so many brands, ‘winning’ is a relief, and ‘losing’ is incredibly hard to handle as you feel that you have let some down by not emerging victoriously.
“When you represent a lot and are the face of so many prestigious brands, you feel as if every time you step onto the pitch the only thing that will make you happy is winning. Or maybe not even that. As she puts it, she was more of a relief when she was winning because she felt like she was letting someone down when she wasn’t winning,” the French tennis legend claimed.
Whereas Bouchard suggested that Osaka must take some advice from Maria Sharapova about how one should handle fame.”You have to be responsible for what you are doing and your destiny. In a way, saying no to a photoshoot if you don’t have a say, so she really dealt with the Russian. I think maybe she is feeling that she is losing control over what is happening around her because she is not in her power,” Bouchard added.
Cambers, on the other hand, said that Osaka must learn from Billie Jean King how to handle media. She has to stay grounded instead of thinking that it is a privilege for the reporters to talk to her. “It’s not just about her. Her agent is not doing a very good job of keeping her grounded, because it is not at all true that the media cost her not to participate in Wimbledon,” he said.
