“Relax, I am fine”: Peng Shuai confirms she is safe in latest video call with IOC President

Peng Shuai, former World No. 1 tennis player in doubles, made some serious allegations against a prominent leader of the Chinese Communist Party a while ago and the world knows what the Chinese Government does something like this comes up.

Peng explained how she was regularly abused by a top former Communist Party leader in a social media post. The post was made on the Chinese social media platform Weibo, and was deleted very soon. After the news came out, many tennis players and WTA has come out in her support and were concerned about her safety.

A few days ago, a letter was issued to the WTA Chairman which was allegedly written by Peng claiming that she is safe and healthy. However, tennis players, organizations, and even Olympic Committee demanded more evidence that could prove Peng’s well-being.

Recently, IOC President Thomas Bach had a one-on-one video interaction with Peng in which she explained that she is safe and is living at her home in Beijing. She claimed that she would like to have her privacy respected at this point in time and added that she is spending time with her friends and family.

Peng confirmed that she will continue to be involved in tennis. Chair of the IOC Athletes’ Commission, Emma Terho was also a part of the interaction. After the call, Emma claimed, “I was relieved to see that Peng Shuai was doing fine, which was our main concern. She appeared to be relaxed. I offered her our support and to stay in touch at any time of her convenience, which she obviously appreciated.”

Towards the end, IOC President Bach invited Peng Shuai for dinner once they meet in Beijing next year in January. Peng gladly accepted his invitation and the interaction came to a close. While many people are now relaxed that Peng is safe, some are still not sure about China’s intentions.
