Not Federer, Nadal or Djokovic; Stefanos Tsitsipas picks “this” legend as the GOAT of tennis
Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic
World No. 4 on the ATP Tour Stefanos Tsitsipas had a rollercoaster season in 2021. While he won his first Masters title and reached his maiden Grand Slam finals, he was also involved in a lot of controversies for his behaviour on the court and in some cases off the court as well.
But despite the drama, he was focused on his game and dished out some good results giving tennis fans one more youngster to watch out for in the coming season as the Greece No. 1 looks for consistency on the highest level in order to consistently challenge for the big titles.
In a recent interview with the Greek media outlet Sport24, Stefanos finally concluded on who is the GOAT in tennis according to him and the answer might surprise a few. The 23-year old picked 14-time Grand Slam champion, Pete Sampras, as the greatest ever to play the sport and then went on to justify his decision on why he snubbed the Big-3 who are often the GOAT for many others.
“For me, it’s Pete Sampras. He was still there. We have always seen him as a great legend of our sport. His flamboyant game. I enjoyed watching his serve-volley game. People say Roger Federer is effortless. I also have the impression that Pete Sampras was very simple and made the game so beautiful to watch,” said Stef.
Stefanos Tsitsipas planning for three times better season in 2022 than 2021
Speaking about his preparations for the upcoming season, Stefanos expects to be more successful in the 2022 season and hopes he is able to achieve three times the success he had in the 2021 season as he now returns from a wrist injury that forced him to withdraw from the 2021 ATP Finals in the group stages itself.
“I am sure I will be 100% back. The goal is definitely to go even higher. I hope the preparation goes well and that the new year will be three times better than this season. Overall I’m happy with where I stand and I think I’m going to have to take an extra step and try and aim for even higher next year.
“That will require new fresh goals and also trying to improve when it comes to becoming more professional and working to find where the 1% lies, or the five percent where I can benefit from it. And I will of course have my team to help me get to that 5% that I’m looking for,” added Tsitsipas.
