In the 3rd round of the US Open 2021, the 6th career meeting and first at the US Open will take place between Czech Republic’s Petra Kvitova and Greece’s Maria Sakkari.
Kvitova is on the lookout for her 2nd title of the season and 3rd Grand Slam title. The former World No. 2 won the 2021 Qatar Open and is yet to reach another final since. The 2-time Grand Slam champion has only 1 semi-final appearance since then which came at the 2021 Bad Homburg Open where she lost to eventual champion Angelique Kerber.
Maria Sakkari has made good runs this season but is yet to reach a final. She made it to the semi-finals of the 2021 French Open and also of the 2021 Miami Open. She played 3 tournaments before the US Open which included her appearance at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics but she is yet to reach the quarter-finals since her week in Miami.

At the US Open 2021, Kvitova is yet to drop a set and has steamrolled her opponents in both the previous rounds. The 2-time quarter-finalist will be playing in the 3rd round of the Grand Slam for the 11th time. She defeated Polona Hercog 6-1, 6-2 in the 1st round and then followed it up with a 7-6(4), 6-2 win over fellow Czech Kristyna Pliskova.
Sakkari is into the 3rd round of the US Open for the 4th time and 3rd consecutive time. The Greek started with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Marta Kostyuk and a 6-4, 6-2 win over Katerina Siniakova in the first and second rounds respectively. Sakkari’s best run at the US Open came in 2020 when she made it to the 4th round and she will be looking to match her previous best.
