Peugeot SHOCK the world by ending long term collaboration with Novak Djokovic amidst vaccination row
Novak Djokovic
World No. 1 Novak Djokovic had a difficult time in Australia last month when his stay was limited to just 10 days as he was deported and banned from entering Australia for 3 years on 16th January 2022, a few hours before his 1st round match in the 2022 Australian Open where he was the 3-time defending champion and a record 9-time tournament champion.
The Serbian returned to action at the Dubai Tennis Championship earlier this month. However, his much-awaited comeback didn’t go to plan as he lost to Jiri Vesely in a shock upset in the quarter-finals. which also resulted in the Serbian dropping to the 2nd spot in the ATP rankings.
Peugeot breaks ties with Novak Djokovic
Peugeot has been one of Novak Djokovic’s main sponsors since 2014. However, the French automobile company has now decided to break ties with the recently deposed World No.1. This comes after the major controversy that Djokovic was a part of in Australia.
The car making brand originally said it had no intentions of dropping the Serb in the wake of his vaccine controversy but has now made a U-turn and ended their sponsorship. The French brand had earlier expressed their gladness that the Serbian had chosen to express himself by his stance of vaccination.
However, Peugeot stated that the cause for the split was not the anti-vaccination stance that the 34-year-old had taken up. Instead, the cause for the break-up is said to be the Covid pandemic. The car company has apparently been hit massively by the pandemic, incurring huge losses and thus eventually having to let go of their star asset in Novak.
“#Djokovic and Peugeot will not be partners going forward, I am told. Peugeot has taken a huge hit financially during the pandemic, and Djokovic was a big client. I am told that his stance on vaccination is not the reason, let’s see if both sides have more to say on the topic,” reported journalist Sasa Ozmo.
