Rafael Nadal, sixth seed at Australian Open 2022 defeated Adrian Mannarino to storm into the quarterfinals. The Spaniard has been in exceptional form in Melbourne so far, although there were several doubts raised with respect to his injury.

Rafael Nadal has entered his 14th Australian Open quarterfinals, as he moves level with John Newcombe for second most last 8 appearances at the Grandslam event. John Newcombe is an Australian tennis legend, who won 7 singles titles and 17 doubles titles during his illustrious career.

The record for most quarterfinal appearances at Australian Open to none other than the Swiss master, Roger Federer. The 40-year-old has reached the quarterfinals on 15 occasions, and winning the title on 6 occasions. His last Australian Open title came in 2018, when he defeated Marin Cilic in the finals.

Rafael Nadal has not enjoyed much success at the Australian Open, when it comes to winning the tournament. However, he has done quite well and performed consistently over the years. In the two years, Nadal has been knocked out in the quarterfinals by the NextGen players. In 2020, he lost to Dominic Thiem in four sets, whereas, he lost to Stefanos Tsitsipas in five sets in 2021.

Rafael Nadal has won only one Australian Open title, which came way back in 2009, when he defeated Roger Federer in the finals. In the last decade, Nadal has reached the finals on four occasions, and each time he has ended up on the losing side.

Rafael Nadal has 14 Australian Open quarterfinal appearances, just one less than what Roger Federer has managed till now. With Nadal having a good few years left in his career, he might surpass Federer’s tally, given that the Swiss is in the final stretch of his career.
